Indonesian Warungs

Warungs are the heart of Southeast Asian food culture, and predominant in Indonesia, where local flavors and traditions come to life. Earning the trust of the ibu-ibu (aunties) who run these eateries is key to uncovering their culinary secrets. Often, they never fully reveal their recipes, so I rely on all my senses to reinterpret their dishes. If you join us for a Denpasar Street Food Tour, you’ll likely experience the same excitement and challenge of discovering these hidden culinary gems and their unique twists.

WARUNG MIRA (KHAS BULELENG)
Bali: Singaraja-Style Food

โ–ถ THE WARUNG
Serving Singaraja-style food, this is one of my favourite warungs in Denpasar. An ice-cold es daluman as soon I sit down at Warung Mira hits the spot.

BABI GULING GRENCENG
BALI: SUCKLING PIG

โ–ถ THE WARUNG

The babi guling is good and offers quite a variety of accompaniments to the traditional slow-roasted pork. A great option for lunch!

MIE KOCOK PAK EMAN PUTRA
BANDUNG: BEEF NOODLE SOUP

โ–ถ THE WARUNG
Knocks out the best bowl of it in the area, so join the locals and make a beeline for their version, which comes in mismatched china bowls and served up with big smiles.

IGA BAKAR SI JANGKUNG
Bandung: Marinated braised beef ribs

โ–ถ THE WARUNG
Pak Jangkung is the man behind the meat here. Heโ€™s someone that personifies the spirit of Sunda. The best part is that the air is filled with one of favourite smells: the heady scent of barbequing meat.

TAHU TIPAT GRENCENG
BALI: PAN-FRIED TOFU SALAD

โ–ถ THE WARUNG

Street-side eating here is all about one thing only โ€“ tahu tipat. Wholesome, spicy and filling, itโ€™s the perfect quick lunch.

BABI GULING BU MANGKU
BALI: SUCKLING PIG

โ–ถ THE WARUNG
Iโ€™ve found a true gem in Babi Guling Bu Mangku. Ibu Mangkuโ€™s warung serves up Baliโ€™s favorite local workerโ€™s breakfast with incredible flavors.
